There was legislation in front of Congress to regulate the supplement and vitamin industries, but their lobbying agencies got involved and suddenly that legislation disappeared. Funny how that works, right?
That doesn’t mean that bodybuilding supplements are dangerous, but it is a buyer beware type of situation. You really need to be careful and do your homework. Also, you need to keep in mind that you need to talk to your doctor, chiropractor, acupuncturist or pharmacist before taking any new supplements as there can be a risk of potential negative interactions. It’s not likely, but you’d better ask first because it certainly beats finding out the hard way.
Are Bodybuilding Supplements Effective?
Yes. They are. That answer comes with several caveats. Most professional bodybuilders are taking a ton of supplements, eating them like they’re candy. You know why? Because they can afford to. Do you know why they can afford to? Because they get them for free. Bodybuilding is a full time job if you want to compete, so the athletes need sponsorships to survive and thrive. They windup signing with supplement manufacturers who provide them with cash and all the supplements they want. This makes it easy for them to maximize their physical potential.
Money is no object for professional bodybuilders and athletes, but what about you? Most likely, you don’t fall into that category, so keep that in mind when thinking about supplements. You probably can’t afford to supplement like the pros do, and neither could they if they had to pay for it.
Another thing to consider is that when you’re in, you’re in. This means that yes, these bodybuilding supplements will help you get big, but they will only stay big if you keep taking them on a regular basis. You can’t just take them till you get huge and then stop taking them and expect to stay huge. You need to maintain your supplement habit in order to maintain the body they create. So keep that in mind before you go supplement shopping.
How To Decide If They’re Right For You
How do you decide which bodybuilding supplements are right for you? Finding out isn’t as simple as you might think. Most supplement companies have their own magazines, which are nothing more than thinly veiled advertisements for their products. And the big names in bodybuilding magazines aren’t much better. Have you ever seen how much advertising is in those things?
That’s a whole other column. But the point is sound. Make sure you do your homework, there are plenty of vitamin shops out there, there are plenty of bodybuilding supplement stores out there as well. I’d suggest hitting up the smaller, mom and pop establishments, because they generally give better advice and have less of a hard sales pitch. Ask around at several before you buy and ask yourself if this is an expense you feel comfortable taking on long term? If it’s safe and you’re committed, why not?
