1 Year of Health, Wealth, and Positivity Answer the Question – Does the Law of Attraction Work?

By on August 27, 2007

It’s been just over one year since I started actively using the Law of Attraction and it’s time for me to answer the question: Does the Law of Attraction work?

Just over a year ago, I watched ‘The Secret’ and my life changed forever. My life did not change because of the hype surrounding the movie, the ensuing marketing frenzy that erupted after it was released, or even because of the Law of Attraction itself.

Does the Law of Attraction work? No, my life changed because in the 90 minutes that it took me to watch the movie and to learn about the Law of Attraction, I became aware. I realized with great torrents of emotion that I was far more in charge of my life than I had been giving myself credit for, or that I had been taking responsibility for, either.

In the end, that is what it all boils down to – responsibility. You need to be 100% accountable for your entire life, including your thoughts, your feelings, and your actions.

The Law of Attraction is not some magical, mystical mumbo-jumbo, but rather a set of guidelines that you can use to create a wonderful life for yourself by attracting the people and the circumstances that are needed in order to make that happen.

So, after spending the last year of my life being aware and being responsible, here are 3 ways that I answer the question “Does the Law of Attraction work?”.

1) Positive Attitude

The first thing that changed in my life was my attitude, and as a result I resolved to surround myself with people who had similar states of mind. Although I’ve always had a fairly positive outlook on life, I am a hot-headed Capricorn and was previously prone to giving in to my anger or frustration during negative circumstances.

Once I learned that all vibrations which we create will attract other vibrations that resonate with our own, I quickly realized that no matter how justified a negative emotional outburst was, I was still shooting myself in the foot by allowing it to happen.

Since that realization, I have almost completely eliminated negative emotions from my life. It wasn’t instant, and I’m still not at 100% positive flow, but I did make the resolve to only allow myself to be around positive people and circumstances.

What did the Law of Attraction bring me 1 year later? I now spend probably 80% of my waking hours interacting with positive people, writing or reading positive content, and building positive friendships. Most of the other 20% or so is spent doing positive things by myself. Yes, there is still the occasional argument or other negative circumstance, but by and large, an incredibly small amount of my life is spent in a negative vibration.

Was I required to take action? I had to consistently and repeatedly remind myself and the people around me that negativity was no longer allowed. And yes, some relationships had to change or go away in order to make that happen.  For the dozens of new and positive friends that I’ve made in the last year, some were a direct result of my own actions, while some were the result of circumstances that I could not possibly have foreseen or orchestrated.

2) Health

Despite the fact that I had just left the personal training profession shortly before watching ‘The Secret’, I was not in as good of shape as I wanted to be, and working from home initially found me starting to lose some of my strength and physical fitness because I wasn’t exercising nearly as much.

Remembering the Law of Attraction lesson that I am 100% responsible for everything in my life, I started focusing on and visualizing the perfect body that I wanted, and I even wrote an eBook about losing weight.

What did the Law of Attraction bring me 1 year later? As I type this, I am in  even better shape than I was when I left my personal training career, and I weigh less than most of my friends or family members have ever seen me.

Was I required to take action? Oh, most definitely. However, the circumstances that led up to me getting back into a healthy lifestyle were actually a direct result of starting this website. There were so many occasions when I needed to dispense health or exercise advice, that I ended up relaunching one of my old training websites, Fitness Destinations, and as a result of doing so, started exercising on a daily basis in order to stay on top of my game.

After purposefully leaving behind a career in personal training, I could not possibly have predicted that my own physical transformation would come about as a result of helping other people. By asking the Universe for a healthy body, I was inspired to help others to be more healthy. In so doing, I lost weight and became more healthy, and my advice to others has been seen via tens of thousands of page views over at the Fitness Destinations blog – a site that I had previously completely abandoned and was going to get rid of.

3) Finances

Much like the change or elimination of certain relationships that was required for me to surround myself with positive people, I had to shed a bunch of self limiting beliefs about how to create wealth as well.

I was previously a “work hard for your money” type of guy, but I also realized that no matter how much someone gets paid by the hour, there are still only 24 hours in each day. That wasn’t enough time for me to make the kind of money that I had in mind, so I started focusing on my goal of financial independence via residual income sources.

What did the Law of Attraction bring me 1 year later? I have opened such a floodgate of wealth-building ideas that I literally do not have time to take action on all of them! I have a to-do list of things that I can do to create wealth by helping other people, and this blog and the Fitness Destinations site are just the beginning. Both sites have experienced significant, measurable growth every single month.

Was I required to take action? By focusing on financial independence via residual income sources, I have been inspired to tend to many different tasks that I would never have thought of before. Every time I think that this site is “done,” I get inspired to tweak the design, I attract an advertiser that brings value to the site, or I learn something new about how to create wealth by helping other people. In each case, the inspiration itself is the Law of Attraction at work – the taking action part is my job.

So, does the Law of Attraction work or doesn’t it?

I can honestly say that there have been far too many “coincidences” or “synchronicities” for me to chalk it up to luck. I have been exposed to both people and circumstances that would never have been a part of my life had I kept going on the path that I was on before I started consciously using the Law of Attraction.

Likewise, there are also people and circumstances that aren’t in my life anymore as a result of me living by my understanding of the Law of Attraction.

Overall, the answer to the question “Does the Law of Attraction work?” is unequivocally YES! However, the Law of Attraction itself is not the key, nor are the hundreds (thousands?) of Law of Attraction rela
ted products that are available.

You are the key.

Your focus. Your belief. Your resolve. Your perseverance. Your inspired actions.

Without you keeping your head where it needs to be for goal attainment, the Law of Attraction will simply continue to bring you more of what your life is already made up of. However, if you want change, the Law of Attraction is a powerful tool.

Thanks for sharing. I love the fact that you pointed out that you do have act on the inspirations you receive every day. The Universe loves action and when you try to keep things the same and sit still, guess what? That energy moves on to the next person who’s willing to accept it and brings that person joy in the form of love, relationships, money, or whatever they desire.

We’ve been practicing the Law of attraction for about two years ever since we saw “What the Bleep Do We Know”, the precursor to “The Secret”. And since then, we’ve both gained what we like to call “True Freedom”. We live a life of joy and follow our passions every day. We are no longer required to slave at a job we hate every day just to get by…

To us, this is freedom and we attribute it to the shift in consciousness that occurred after watching that movie. We realized that we are responsible for everything that comes into our lives. Yes, that’s a big responsibility, but one that we are happy to embrace!

For us, the Law of Attraction (as well as the many other Universal Laws that form our reality) absolutely work! When you’re ready, do a little reading on the Law of Tenfold Return…

    Dan & Jennifer,

I love your concept of “True Freedom” because that is exactly what it is! When we realize that we are responsible for everything in our lives, then we become empowered to change anything that we want to change. You can’t get any more free than that! 🙂

Thanks for your comment and also for your tip on the Law of Tenfold Return. I’ll definitely check that out!

Great post Aaron. Your situation is a perfect example of what it takes to achieve success. You’re right that the Law of Attraction is the jumping off point. It all begins in the mind. It sets the wheels in motion. But, from that point forward, you must take action to continue your progress. To every action, there is an equal an opposite reaction. But when it comes to humans, your positive actions will attract people who will help you, guide you and support you.

PDA stands for Productivity, Discipline and Action. You can increase your Productivity if you exercise Discipline and take Action. Productivity is the fuel that drives your success.

I had a similar experience over five years ago after reading Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. That led me to adopt the right mindset and begin taking one step after another to lead me to where I am now. Good luck to you in the year to come.

I saw the secret at the beginning of the year and it has certainly made me more aware. However, call me cynical or just an old fuddy-duddy or whatever, but I still believe in a natural balance – I don’t deny the negative – in fact I welcome it sometimes – a good cry out of frustration, anger or whatever clears out the system (reminds me that I am indeed human) and is a good stress reliever – what’s wrong with that. The secret makes no room for darkness – in life there is both day and night, light and dark. The world will go out of balance if there is all light or all dark. Just something to ponder…..

Great article Aaron. I enjoy your up front, take-no-prisoners writing style which I think is needed on this subject to get past the hype and mumbo jumbo sometimes associated with LOA.

You mention awareness in the article – such a powerful but often forgotten part of self improvement. I love the quote I heard from Robin Sharma: “Greater awareness leads to better choices, and with better choices you will see greater results”.

    Rick,

Thank you so much for adding value to the conversation! Your PDA acronym is right on the money; Productivity, Discipline, & Action.

My success in the previous year required frequent doses of all 3 of those traits, and the coming year will be more of the same.

However, with a year of experience using the Law of Attraction under my belt, I will definitely be proving that consistency in belief systems as well as PDA are fuel for achieving massive results!

    Viv,

It’s funny that you should mention that in your comment because I just got done reading this post by Karen Lynch in which she discusses a similar concept.

She advises quite accurately that the idea behind the Law of Attraction is to feel good, and that feeling good does not always mean embracing a positive emotion.

Any emotion that resonates with you in a way that takes your vibrations higher than they were before is going in the right direction, even if that emotion is not “positive” by most people’s standards. Positive and negative are simply points of view as determined by the observer anyway.

There is a new movie coming out called ‘The Opus’ that may delve more deeply into matters such as these than ‘The Secret’ did.

    Peter,

I appreciate the props on my writing style, and I am truly grateful to hear that my messages are coming across the way that I intended for them to.

I’m a big believer in the Law of Attraction, but I’m also a realist, and success takes awareness so you’ll know when to zig, or when to zag.

I love the quote that you shared! I’m going to repeat it below in block quotes in order to bring more attention to it:

Greater awareness leads to better choices, and with better choices you will see greater results.
    – Robin Sharma

Aaron, I had been working with the Law of Attraction for awhile when I saw The Secret. What the movie did for me was to focus all that I had been doing in one spot. I have ignored the hype, as you called it, because the information that the movie is based on is sound. I found you because of Priscilla Palmer’s list. Isn’t it a great way to find out about all of the great Personal Improvement blogs out there. I have all of my reading material for the next year right here on her one list and it is still growing.

    Patricia,

Welcome! Yes, the list that Priscilla started has grown HUGE and it is a wonderful resource. For anyone reading this who hasn’t seen it yet, here is the URL:

    Personal Development List

I totally agree with what you said about focus, Patricia. By putting all of our energies into one concept, we are able to become very proficient at using those principles.

With so many conscious creation modalities out there – the Law of Attraction, EFT, Ho’oponopono, Reiki – just to name a few, it is important to use a system that resonates for each person, and stick to it.

Good article… I agree that awareness is the key to everything. Any area of your life where your awareness is lacking is handled by your subconscious based on previous situations that it perceives as similar… but which your conscious mind might not agree apply. When you become aware, then you take that choice away from your subconscious, where you can apply your intelligence and consciously chosen priorities to it.

PS – Has it been a year since you started this site, as well? Are you happy with its progress?

  12. aaron says

    August 27, 2007 at 5:39 pm

    Jason,

Awesome way to explain our awareness! By making conscious choices, we take away the ability of our subconscious to sabotage our efforts. That is why I am such a big advocate of frequent reminders every single day of our goals, affirmations, etc. It is far too easy to allow our subconscious to slowly but surely take over the driver’s seat.

As far as this blog, yes, it has been just under a year. I started posting last September. To say that I’m happy with it’s progress would be an understatement! 🙂

However, that being said, there is so much more still to do both on this site as well as in the personal development community in general.

Look for an announcement soon about the updated status of the Personal Development Partners community which will be relaunching in the very near future!

    Congratulations on 1 year!

I came to learn about the Law of Attraction, way before the Secret – about 4 1/2 years ago – through Abraham-Hicks. This information immediately resonated deep within me.

Then just a few weeks later – my partner of 18 years – laid down one night and never got up again! My life as I had known it changed on that day!

I grabbed onto Abraham and the Law of Attraction – I grabbed on for dear life!

I identify with all the ways your life has changed. My life today is fantastic! I also now have a deep understanding for what we call death.

This has been an incredible journey and it keeps getting better!

    Create a Wonder-Filled Day!

    Ellie,

Welcome, and thanks for sharing your experiences!

Death is definitely something that people can come to understand differently when embracing our roles as energetic beings. I am sure that learning about and understanding the Law of Attraction after your partner left this plane caused your world to change drastically.

Keep enjoying the journey, Ellie, and thanks for sharing some of it with us! 🙂

What a great post. I have to admit that I tend not to follow many blogs – not because I don’t like reading other blogs but because I know if I did I wouldn’t have the time for anything else – but I keep coming back to your blog.

And Ellie, I am a fan of Esther Hicks and Abraham as well. I can’t get enough of it. Funnily enough I am in two minds as to whether I believe that she is actually channelling anyone but it really doesn’t matter to me as what she has to say is so incredibly wise.

    Paula,

Well I would like to offer up my sincerest gratitude that you keep taking the time to come by and see the latest here at Today is that Day!

I have a lot of blogs that I enjoy, but like you, I ration out the time I have available for blog reading, and only consistently follow a certain number. Thank you very much, Paula, for making this site part of your high priority list! 🙂

Also, I’m with you on Abraham. I certainly believe it is possible that Esther can actually channel some sort of energy, but whether she is or isn’t, the advice is just as sound, just as useful, and just as empowering!
