Meditation 101 – How To Start Meditating Today

By on July 13, 2021

There are many disciplines, philosophies, and methods around meditation… some far more elaborate than others.

But the 2 key questions to ask yourself are…
1.) Why do you wish to meditate?
2.) What’s the fastest way to get there from here?

Here’s WHY Everyone Should Practice Daily Meditation

There are so many benefits of meditation (even a short 10 minute session does great things), tho everyone is different and may experience different results. Here are some more commonly experienced benefits of meditation:

  • Increased happiness
  • Reduced stress
  • Better health (many health issues come back to high stress)
  • Increased general sense calm, peace, and feeling of being centered
  • Increased focus
  • It feels really darn good

As For “How To” Start Meditating

The problem with complex and elaborate methods is they add so much overhead that many people never “make it” there.

So our focus today is to find a simple and effective way you can actually meditate TODAY.

The hardest part with most endeavors is actually STARTING. So that’s what we’ll do, we’re going to start today.

The objective is very simple…. to achieve a state of focus and calm, to quite the busy brain.

Here’s What You’ll Need

1.) A quiet corner where you won’t be disturbed for 15 minutes

2.) Smartphone with headphones

3.) Very soothing and relaxing music

Meditation Music

While “meditation music” is by no means required, a very soothing track can help calm the mind and help you find a calm place faster and easier. For that reason it’s highly recommended.

I recently found this most excellent track for daily meditation. Moses Code Meditation by Dr. Wayne Dyer.

Here it is on Spotify, which is how I listen to it:

Holosync is also a great meditation music soundtrack. Over the years we’ve found many soothing options, but I still often myself going back to the Holosync program. Me personally, I really like the soothing melodies with the relaxing water flow.

Here’s a sample they make available – really this should work just fine for you by clicking “Play” on the video embedded below, and it’s just the right length too.

Here’s The Process

1.) Sit cross legged, back straight, in a comfortable place. Carpeted floor with your back to a reading chair is fine for example.

2.) Start the relaxing music over your headphones. Set a timer for 15 or 20 minutes if you like.

3.) Close your eyes and relax. Put all worries and “to-do’s” on hold for later, they are not welcome in this moment.

4.) Take slow, deep breaths to go deeper. You can count down from 10 with each breath.

5.) The next couple of minutes are very interesting…

Your mind will start coming up with all kinds of things to distract you. Ignore these.
The biggest challenge to meditation is the overactive brain, throwing things at you to worry about, i.e. “you forgot this, you need to do this later, etc, etc.”

Stay focused, and for everything that comes up like that, just mentally say “later”. Nothing to worry about now.

6.) Think about whatever brings you a feeling of joy and happiness. The love of a puppy, a peaceful, relaxing mountain lake oasis, etc… whatever brings you a feeling of joy and happiness.

7.) You will slowly begin to feel a floating sensation, and notice very peaceful feeling wash over you. Your goal is to maintain that state.

When Should You Meditate?

Daily… sometimes a few times a day will feel great.

A quick morning meditation and really help set your intention for the day.

A quick meditation before bed is a great way to combat insomnia and fall asleep easily – with the right intention, as opposed to focusing on worries.

When you feel stressed. I find a quick few minutes of meditation to be a great solution if I ever feel stressed or uncentered.

Don’t Take Meditation, Or Life, Or Yourself Too Seriously!

Happiness and peace are a mindset, a way of life. The trick is getting “form here to there”.

Focus on being positive, looking on the bright side of things, looking for the opportunity. It’s generally there if you’re willing to look for it.

And banish negative influences and people from your life, the ones that drag you down and reaffirm the negative.

These are all choices, and one choice at a time, you’ll be a happier person day in and day out.

“Breathe in strength, breathe out horse shit…”

Enjoy the delightfully NSFW guided meditation below.
