At this point in the game, the word “Ho‘oponopono” is not nearly as well known as it will be within the next 6 to 12 months, so I am putting forth this basic description of Ho‘oponopono so that you can decide for yourself if you would like to engage in some further study.
Based on what I know, I would recommend that you DO spend more time learning about and practicing Ho‘oponopono, and if you take that advice, Dr. Joe Vitale is the man who you want to learn about it from. Dr. Vitale’s passion on this subject is amazing, and as of this date (November 7, 2006) he already has a book in the works on this very subject called Zero Limits.
The basic idea behind Ho‘oponopono stems from the meaning of the word, given to us by the Hawaiian culture. Loosely translated, Ho‘oponopono means “to set things right”, or, in more simple terms, to fix stuff!
Everyone has things that they want to have fixed, and Ho‘oponopono is not only a powerful way to fix literally everything that you can imagine, but it is so ridiculously simple to use that there is really no reason to not take advantage of this powerful technique.
The basic concept behind Ho‘oponopono is going to first require you to realize the immutable fact that your entire existence comes from within, not from outside of yourself.
John Assaraf does a great job of vocalizing this concept during part of his teachings in the movie ‘The Secret‘. John says “There is no ‘out there’ and ‘in here'”, and that is the very truth of our Universal existence.
We are all one with all things at all times. That may be tough to grasp for some, but it’s true. We are all simply extensions of “source energy”, which is the very “stuff” that the entire Universe is made out of.
So, if we are made out of this source energy – which we are, and based on Quantum Mechanics, we are all creators of our own existence (which we are), then one very simple truth rears it’s head for all to see, and it is quite undeniable:
Everything is your Creation!
Everything that you see, hear, feel, smell, touch, think, remember, or emotionally react to – these are all things that YOU have created. And yes, that includes the good, as well as the bad. Each of these things exists because on some level you want them to exist, which takes us back to Ho‘oponopono.
If everything that you perceive in the world exists BECAUSE you perceive it, can you guess what amazing and God-like power you have at your very fingertips?
That’s right. You can either make more of it, or you can make it go away!
No, I’m not talking about creating thousand dollar bills out of thin air, or wishing away annoying in-laws. However, it is indeed possible for you to create your life so that you HAVE thousand dollars bills, or that your in-laws are no longer an annoyance to you.
That tip alone is probably worth the price of admission, right?
How is all of this done via Ho‘oponopono? By simply accepting responsibility.
When you truly grasp and get your head around the fact that you are literally creating every single piece of your existence – from the smallest molecule up through the tallest skyscraper, from the most heart-felt Love to the most gut-wrenching hatred – then you realize that you can effect change over each and every one of those things because you are responsible for them being there to begin with.
You do this simply by showing Gratitude for the things in your life that you are thankful for and that you want to grow and flourish, and by showing Forgiveness for the things that you want to go away or diminish.
Now, let’s see if you have been paying attention:
If you are responsible for all things in your existence – the good as well as the bad – and you have the power to diminish or to allow those things to grow simply by showing Gratitude or Forgiveness, who are you showing Gratitude and Forgiveness TO?
……
……
……
Okay, time’s up. It’s YOU! If you created something that is wonderful, you are thanking yourself for doing so, thus ensuring future occurrences of that same positive behavior. If you created something terrible, then you are forgiving yourself for doing it, thus making sure that it doesn’t happen again in the future.
Here is where it gets tough to swallow, but these concepts are just as true on a “microcosm” level as they are on a “macrocosm” level:
You are responsible for everything that is part of your existence. I always like the bad news first, so I’ll share that courtesy with you (thus creating more courtesy for myself, if you’ve been paying attention):
Terrorism is your fault. Murder is your fault. Famine and disease are your fault. School shootings are your fault. Taxes are your fault.
OUCH! That hurts, doesn’t it? You bet it does. But here’s the good news:
Love is your fault. Childbirth is your fault. Families are your fault. Friends are your fault. Medical miracles are your fault. Firemen are your fault. Pets are your fault. A child’s curiosity is your fault. Unadulterated JOY is all YOUR fault!
Are you starting to see your power now? You can do it all. In fact, you ARE doing it all. Right now, at this very moment as you read this. You are both creating and destroying your world, because it is all YOU.
When you go to bed tonight and you can’t sleep, you created that. When you pass out face down on your pillow and get the best night’s sleep of your life, you created that, too.
When you get out of bed in the morning and it’s raining so hard that you can’t even see your car in your own driveway, that is your creation. When you get up in the morning and you are greeted by a dawn that could literally be the dawning of Time itself (and it is), that is also your creation.
It’s all you. All the Good, all the Bad, and everything in between. And you can control these things by learning to control your Gratitude and your Forgiveness reactions to them with <a href="https://TodayIsThatDay.com/blog/recommended/beyondmanifestat
ion.php”>Ho‘oponopono.
Different practitioners have different methods of invoking the power of Ho‘oponopono, but since I believe in Dr. Joe Vitale (after all, he is MY creation), I am utilizing his methods of invoking Ho‘oponopono, which can be summed up in the 4 phrases that he uses whenever he wants to invoke Ho‘oponopono, which is also called “cleaning”:
“I Love You”
“I’m Sorry”
“Please Forgive Me”
“Thank You”
That’s it! By creating a mantra of saying those 4 things pretty much as often as you can day after day and week after week, you will quickly come to the realization that by Loving yourself, by Apologizing to yourself when you have done something wrong, by Forgiving yourself for that wrong-doing, and by Thanking yourself for the opportunity to create Good, as well as to stop creating Bad, that you can create your life to be “right”.
Remember that the loose definition of Ho‘oponopono is “to set things right”. Since you are the sole creator of your entire existence, you have the power to create whatever “right” world that you want to live in, and you can do it by simply saying and believing those 4 simple phrases.
I know that for some of you, all of this may seem incredibly hard to believe. You refuse to grasp the fact that you are literally the very creator of the entire existence that you live, and that you can easily manipulate that existence with 4 sets of words.
So here is one more test for you:
If you don’t believe any of this, who created that disbelief?
Think about it.
And yes, I Forgive You.
If you are interested in Ho’oponopono, be sure to check out Joe Vitale’s DVD’s ‘Install and Transcend the Secret‘ and ‘The Missing Secret‘.
Ho’oponopono works immediately! Test it out for yourself.
Also, for faster results, keep playing The Secret movie over and over while repeating the ho’oponopono simple words. It works miracles.

Love You
I cannot get enough of this stuff.
Thank you – Thank you – Thank you
You are most welcome, Marlene! Thanks for signing up for the newsletter, as well. I’ll keep shelling out good info as often as I am inspired to do so, which is fairly frequently, so thanks for reading and getting some good brain food out of it!
Hooponopono is really mind-blowing, and I love you. I am sorry, please forgive me, and I thank you for that amazing article. Right! Hooponopono means to “set things right” or as you rightly wrote, “fix stuffs.”
I am reminded of a lesson in the A Course in Miracles that say, “I am responsible for what I see, I choose the feelings that I experience, and I decide upon the goals that I will achieve. And everything that seems to happen to me, I ask for and receive as I have asked.” Right, that was basic Hooponopono stuff…
Thanks to you, and Joe Vitale and Dr. Len. My big salute to you wonderful people.
Sincerely,
King
King,
Ho’oponopono is some truly powerful stuff, and it is the epitome of empowerment itself when each person realizes that they are 100% in charge of everything. What can be more powerful than that? 🙂
I’m happy to help spread the word about Ho’oponopono and I’m looking forward to reading Zero Limits from Dr. Vitale!
Just read the Book Zero Limits- Great – when you gets stuck I also do The Work of Katie Byron- I am sorry and I Love you –
Lorrie,
Thanks for the tip on Katie as well as the heads up on Zero Limits. I can’t wait to read my copy!!
Awesome summary of Ho‘oponopono, thank you!! I am listening to zero limits seminar now,and it works!
I love the 100% ownership and responsibility – but a big question remains unanswered (at least clearly for me) – How can I create my world and you create your world without stepping on each other’s toes, as it were! How is it that you saying I’m sorry etc. will fix my stuff that *I’m* responsible for and vice versa!!
I have spent much of my life on mission to answer this and have found a way to share a simple (but mind-stretching) answer. I have created a free new online video, “The Omega Shift”, to give an experience as well as an understanding of how we both create reality, together.
It’s maybe even a step beyond Zero Limits, and so not for everyone – but if you do watch it, we found that only those who watch it *all*, and don’t skip forward, actually ‘get it’ (and they love it!) It’s an hour and half step-by-step process of opening mind and heart to who we both are! Go to http://www.theomegashift.com to register.
I would love to hear any comments you have – I believe it takes Ho‘oponopono to the next level, because it takes the idea of you creating and owning *the whole* of your reality from inspired belief and faith to direct experience and knowing (if you stick with it – and whether you do or don’t I love you, forgive and thank you!!!)
John

John,
Thanks for sharing the opportunity for my readers to check out your free video. I went over to your site and signed up for it myself, and I will watch it as soon as I have the chance. Once I do, I will probably put up a new post here on the site if it contains some information that I think will help people to expand their awareness of their power to create! 🙂
Thanks again, John.
Two days after I discovered the “Hoponopono way” through a flow of so called “coincidences”…I got a message on one of my blogs to the “Omega shift”. I watched the videos and all came together…It does not mean that I got all solved but I felt personally that it takes this question of “100 ownership”out of a pattern where we still have to feel sorry for something…Do we really have to? What if I do create all this just for some personal reason? I feel the Omega way offers the “I love you as I love me” (Wasn’t that part of the message of Yeshuah…) but without the necessity to feel sorry or bad for anything (which is the NEW aspect in it, the end of “doing wrong”. Isn’t it the only way to really love ourselves unconditionally ).
Patrice,
Thanks for sharing your point of view on Ho’oponopono and The Omega Shift!
I watched the video the other day and I agree with the part of their message which states that everything in our universe is “us”.
As to whether or not we should feel “sorry” for things that Ho’oponopono cleaning is supposed to help us to clear out, I think that would be up to the individual. As Dr. Len and the other Ho’oponopono practitioners say, the actual phrases that you repeat to yourself are not important – only the meaning that you assign to them.
So, if saying “I’m sorry” does not resonate with a person, then they definitely should not use that phrase.
Personally, I memorized the whole mantra and I like it, so I’m sticking with those 4 phrases. 🙂
I like your point Aaron,
Thanks for your answer
and for the energy you are moving
with this blog.
wish you the best.
Aaron, thanks for the ho’oponopono promotion. FYI for anyone interested: Dr. Len is teaching this live in Maui this Nov 30 – Dec 2 (sign up on Joe Vitale’s site). Cost is $1,000 if you sign up before end of August.
I heard Zero Limits was not getting great reviews, and wondered your thoughts? You might have posted about it already. I’ve just discovered your great material here and will likely be spending the whole day here!!
But that’s okay. I love you. I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. : )

Jeannette,
As a result of you discovering this site, I have also discovered yours and just got done adding it to my RSS reader. Looking forward to keeping up with you. 🙂
Thanks for the heads up on the Maui trip. I’ve heard Dr. Len on audio several times, but I’ve never seen him in person. I imagine he is this totally laid back guy who carries around an air of “anti-stress”!
To be honest, I have not yet read ‘Zero Limits’. I recommend it site unseen just because I’ve read so much of Joe Vitale’s other work, and I’ve heard him on countless conference calls, many of which included discussions of ‘Zero Limits’.
Although I haven’t read or heard any negative reviews from the book, my guess would be that the book talked more about the theory, and didn’t give as much practical application information as people were hoping for. Again, that’s just a guess, so don’t hold me to it. 🙂
And, although I know from what I have heard from Dr. Vitale that the book does explain the details behind what Ho’oponopono is all about, I have also heard from him stories of how Dr. Len makes jokes about being at long seminars just to take 5 minutes to tell people to say “I’m sorry,” “Please forgive me,” “Thank you,” and “I love you”!
Ho’oponopono can be very complicated if someone tries too hard to understand it, or it can be “stupid simple,” meaning that it doesn’t take a lot of brains to get a lot of benefit out of it! 🙂
{THIS COMMENT HAS BEEN MODERATED FOR LENGTH BY SITE OWNER}
The comment that Nabiyah left is full of some GREAT information about Ho’oponopono, and I definitely recommend that you give it a read. However, it was really long, so I put it into a text file that you can easily open up by clicking right here.
Thanks for the great information, Nabiyah! You have a firm grip on your understanding of Ho’oponopono, and again, I recommend to all readers that you check out Nabiyah’s text by clicking above.

My friend and cousin King Cabreros introduced me to Hooponopono a few months back, and I am really grateful that I practised the basic principles of Hooponopono. Yes, yes, Joe Vitale’s basic premise of LOVING YOURSELF, APOLOGIZING TO YOURSELF, FORGIVING YOURSELF AND THANKING YOURSELF is simply fantastic. It keeps the subconscious mind stop replaying bad and painful memories and the Divine Mind through the superconscious mind and then the conscious mind transmute them to the void and then replace them with only Inspirations. Very simple but also very complicated.
But to practice Hooponopono is to trust in the Divine Mind that there is no loss of memory and you recollect everything but you also forget all that is not good for you. Thus, the subsconscious does not replay anymore memories that is not for your good and thus replace them with inspirational themes, like abundance, happiness, good health, prosperity, success, discipline, detachment, discernment, principles of truth, righteousness, peace, love and non-violence.
Thank you all. I love you, I am sorry, please forgive and thank you for the opportunity to know this ancient Hawaiian technique.
Camilo,
Thanks for helping to further the understanding of Ho’oponopono!
I have heard Joe Vitale talk about the fact that memories from all time are available to us through the super-conscious, which is why (my words, not Joe’s) it is important for us to be able to “clean” those memories.
Much like coming to terms with a tragic event from our childhood is something that modern-day psychologists often recommend, if you consider that we have access to all memories of everything that has ever happened since the dawn of time, then there is a lot of potential cleaning to do! 🙂
Hooponopono is really mind-blowing.
Aaron,
I love you.
I am sorry, please forgive me, and I thank you for that amazing article.
Thanks to you, and Joe Vitale and Dr. Len.
I like your efforts Aaron,
and for the energy you are moving
with this blog.
wish you the best.
Vyasa
Vyasa,
Thank you so much for the positive feedback and for continuing to build the momentum for Ho’oponopono. It is such a simple and empowering concept, and I am truly grateful to have attracted so much attention to it with this blog.
Many thanks to you and to all who are helping to “clean” up our very existence! 🙂
I wondered if anyone here has been to a seminar or workshop taught by Dr. Len. If so, I’d love to hear about it. I was thinking of going to his Maui event that Joe Vitale helped put together for late November, but have since learned Dr. Len teaches them all over the country for significantly less than what they’re charging for Maui ($375 vs. $1500 from what I gather).
Thanks again, Aaron, for bringing this material to the forefront! I suspect it is powerfully life-changing – and fits right in with what you deliver consistently to your readers.
Thank you!
& Love you!

Jeannette,
I do my best to keep the words flowing that inspire people to create positive changes in their life. It is an on-going process, and no one ever knows it all, so I appreciate the endorsement as I keep on trucking with that mission! 🙂
As far as the Dr. Len seminars, I have never been to one, but I did listen to a 2-hour mini-seminar that he and Dr. Vitale did. I’m sure it wasn’t the same as being there, but it was still very informative. They did a lot of Q & A about Ho’oponopono, and most of it led back to the very basic tenet that we are all 100% responsible for everything in our lives, and that “cleaning” is something that we do in order to communicate with “the divine”.
In essence, each of us has access to all of the memories and experiences literally since the beginning of time, so the cleaning that we do now is done in order to get clear of self-imposed beliefs that are a cumulative effective of our lives to date, as well as everything that has happened in the past.
Whew! Pretty heavy stuff, right? 🙂
Nonetheless, actually practicing Ho’oponopono is simplicity itself, and faith in the process is far more important than understanding exactly how it all works.
Yes the saying “I’m sorry” doesn’t quite get it for me. For me it is quite discounting of myself to apologize. There are no wrong or right choices, there are just choices until you define them right or wrong..
John R.
Nice to know I’m not the only one who feels that way. Thanks for saying so, John!
John,
I love this quote:
That is SO true! As far as the “I’m Sorry” phrase in Ho’oponopono, the question comes up often about what that phrase means and what it means to the individual whenever they use it.
In short, the answer is that each person should use phrases that resonate with them. You don’t even have to use any of the 4 phrases that are considered “standard”. When you are talking to the “divine” (or whatever you want to call it/him/her), the words are for our benefit, not theirs. 🙂
Why yes I do 🙂
this is such a new begining for me and there is a part within me that knows this to be true for me, i’m like many millions of people around the world struglling to lose weight i have about 80lbs to go and its not shifting but it is slowly coming off, i am not sure what words to use to help forgive myself because i do feel like i am going to brake down and cry even repeating the words in my head brings forth tears, i would be greatful for any help and advice anyone may be willing to share with me.
leaving you all with love, light & peace
shirley
Shirley,
Ho’oponopono is all about accepting responsibility, so having tears over your situation is not something that you should be upset about. Accepting responsibility for something and blaming yourself are 2 entirely different things.
Blame is a fear-based emotion that is steeped in thoughts of unworthiness, future ability to be a certain type of person, etc. Responsibility, on the other hand, is facing up to the things that you have done in the past that you will now do in a better or more positive way in the future.
When you use the Ho’oponopono term “I’m sorry,” don’t regret what you have done, but rather show gratitude for the fact that you have seen the contrast between the past and the future that you desire.
thank you for your reply i will take on board all you have said and when doing my prayers and journal work remember the power that comes from the meaning of Ho’oponopono.
thank you once again
shirley
Aaron,
I just came across this page..event string perhaps?
I often wondered how the secret really begins to
take effect. When I watch the movie, I observed each
of the teachers and noticed that they are extremely
calm, poised, and are surrounded by a presence of
peace. I am going to try ho’oponopono and I will let
you know what happens.
Tom
Shirley – You are most welcome. I am truly grateful to have helped in any way!
Tom – I’ll look forward to hearing about your experiences with Ho’oponopono. I have found that retaining a calm, controlled demeanor is not only enjoyable, but an effective landscape for creating positive change as well.
Hi Aaron,
“We are all one with all things at all times. That may be tough to grasp for some, but it’s true. We are all simply extensions of “source energy”, which is the very “stuff” that the entire Universe is made out of.”
Nicely stated!
The truth is simple. If it were complicated, everyone would understand. (could not remember who I could quote this from – fill in!)
Adrian,
Thanks for the great feedback, and you’re right, it DOES seem too simple for people to understand it!
That’s okay – just like we’re all made of the same “stuff,” we can all find a way to complicate things enough so that they are to our liking! 🙂
Aaron, is there any significance to the order in which the components of the Ho’oponopono are stated? I have seen it expressed in every possible order, but it would stand to reason that the process would follow a certain sequence of thoughts or expressions.
For instance, it feels appropriate for me to start with “I’m sorry”, and follow with, “Please forgive me”. This is the confession, if you will, or the acknowledgement that some belief I am holding is suspiciously contradictory to my core belief system and is creating dis-ease.
By taking responsibility for the belief and asking for forgiveness, regardless of how or why it got there in the first place, I am releasing its hold on me without condition. There is no remorse or “I am a lowly sinner” sentiment attached to this at all.
“I love you”, then, absolves, cleanses and sets me free from the belief that was not serving me at all and frees up more disc space in my mind, so to speak, for downloading only the good thoughts from now on!
Lastly, “Thank you”, opens the floodgates for more prosperity, in lieu of the frozen assests, that were previously linked to the error in thought. Done deal–now, it is time to move on the next one!
Hugh,
The short answer is that No, it doesn’t matter which order you use the power phrases in. As a matter of fact, you don’t even have to use all of the phrases, or even those exact phrases.
The entire Ho’oponopono process is dependent on the practitioner being in alignment with what feels right for them. Some people have an energetic resistance to a certain power phrase, or it doesn’t feel “right” for them to say the phrases in a certain order. For those people, sticking to a rock-solid way of practicing Ho’oponopono – even if that method does not resonate with them – will retard the process.
So, the longer answer to the question is that No, it doesn’t matter which order you use the phrases it, but rather that you should come up with phrases and/or an order of phrases that truly resonates with you on an individual level.
As we “speak” to our divine selves, we do so with our feelings, not with the actual words that we use, so it is more important that we generate the proper feelings with the power phrases than that we say a particular phrase, or use a particular order.
Aaron, thank for your insightful response to my query. It was confusing to me to see the ho’oponopono phrases, “all over the place”, from person to person.
My need for a methodical, orderly approach to it may not resonate with the next person and that makes perfect sense.
Thanks, again, for this awesome site! I am looking forward to further exploration of it as I have only begun to scratch the surface.
Hugh,
I’m very grateful that I was able to give you some insights, and I’m sure you’ll see great success with Ho’oponopono!
Thanks for the positive feedback on the site and I’ll look forward to keeping the great content flowing!
Hi Aaron,
Thank you for all the great information about Ho’oponopono!
I’ve recently read Zero Limts, which I really enjoyed, but would like to ask you about the feelings behind the words.
In the book Joe talks about him being frustrated with an employee, and that he kept repeating I love you all the time, even though he felt like he wanted to kill him instead. How then, if we have to have feeling behind our words, would that have ‘resolved’ the problem?
I’m asking as I have been repeating the frazes every day for a couple of weeks, but not with any real feelings attached to it… so, am I ‘retarding’ the process?
Would appreciate your input!
Again, Thank you for the great info!
Moria x
Hi, Moria.
I think the key consideration here is not so much feeling as it is belief.
The reason why our emotions play such a large part in how things unfold for us is because it is the vibrations of our emotions that are “heard” by the divine.
So, if we are saying something over and over again – and believing that those words will help – then we are sending out a feeling of belief, even if we don’t feel particularly loving and charitable at that moment, or towards that person.
However, if we send out a vibration of “I’m saying ‘I love you’, but I don’t think it is going to help,” then that is what the divine will here.
I think the bottom line is that the divine hears what our hearts are truly saying, rather than the words that are coming out of our mouth. 🙂
Thank you, Aaron 🙂
That makes perfect sense!
Moria x
I love you
I’m sorry
Please forgive me
Thank you
I am in a class and last night’s discussion was about this process. From what I gather on this blog, in order for this to work you have to beleive that it will work? Is there any way around this? Can you just hope it works? I find it very difficult to have a leaf of faith in this system without having experienced it first. Any help would be appriciated.
-Melissa
Hi, Melissa.
I can’t give an honest answer about whether or not it works without the faith, since I DO have that faith. However, as a general rule, the more you believe in something, the better fortune it is going to bring you.
Nonetheless, that being said, there is something to be said about the distraction and redirection that the Ho’oponopono processes bring to potentially negative thoughts and feelings. By simply going through the 4 power phrases, you tend to “take the edge off” whenever you are feeling stressed, frustrated, scared, etc.
That alone has value, even if a lack of faith keeps any larger effects from manifesting into your life.
The concepts of Ho’oponopono are basic teachings of God.
Love, forgive and be grateful.
By loving, forgiving and especially being grateful we are connecting to our God/Source.
When we practice the power to love and not only forgive one’s self but forgive all others as well as being in a constant state of gratitude for everything and anything we will begin to have miraculous effects on our own universes. Especially if practiced daily.
The problem most people have is that they are too “busy” with earthly distractions to “connect”.
Until Now.
I didnt buy it at first, but now Im hooked! 🙂
2009 has been a taugh year for me. I found Hoponopono in my way I tried it when everything was dark and I really could experience that things started to change positively.
I love your full-out and passionate explanation of this! You put it all into words the way I wish I could, and I appreciate your ability to do so. I first heard of Ho'oponopono through being on Joe Vitale's list and the first time he sent the story of Dr. Hew Len healing the inmates without even meeting with them one-on-one. Amazing! Since then, I've done my best to use Hooponopono in my own daily life. ~ Laurie
